GenCyber 2022 Summer Camp
During 2022, I became the Lead Mentor for the GenCyber 2022 Summer Camp. This was an educational camp designed to teach students and teachers about Cybersecurity. As the lead mentor I was tasked with leading the other mentors, reviewing their presentations, labs, and managing meetings. One of my other tasks were teaching teachers about AI, and how to use an AI face recognition model. Below is a PDF presentation about the beginning of AI and its change into Deep Learning
Before I did this project, I was introduced to the camp during the 2020 pandemic. This was my first time being a mentor at a summer camp and an online one too. However, we were constantly communicating and having weekly meetings to ensure we were all on the same page. Overall, the GenCyber 2020 camp was a success and the students wanted to come and participate again.
My performance did so well that I was offered the position of Lead Mentor for the GenCyber 2022 camp. I gratefully took the position. As mentioned before, the Lead Mentor position had much more responsibilities especially with teaching AI to teachers. Sadly, we could not do a deep dive into the topic of AI as we only had a week and each day I only had a one-hour time block. With that said, the end goal of my presentations was to inspire teachers to include more technology into their lesson plans whether or not it included AI.
I was a little nervous because I knew that my audience was going to be teachers. I wanted to teach them new information in an interesting and engaging way. From the survey and other comments from the teachers I did well and the teachers loved my presentations. Though a funny side comment I learned was that "teachers are the worst students."
